Appropriate Attire: First Date Edition

By Nicole Schwartz · On May 23, 2012

First dates can be awkward. We want to make the best impression possible but still be ourselves. I am often asked if during first date anxiety men really need the added worry of putting themselves together and presenting themselves in a favourable way? My simple answer, as a woman AND as an image professional…ABSOLUTELY!

When it comes to getting dressed for a first date, most men are often lost.  Keeping it simple yet appropriate is always a safe bet. This may sound slightly complicated, but I can assure you it all makes good sense.

Assuming you (the guy) planned the date, you know what you are doing and where you are going. Keep that in mind when choosing an outfit for your date. You always want to be appropriate for the surroundings and situation – if you are going to a nice restaurant, a dress shirt and dark jeans or slacks are probably your best bet; if you are going for drinks to a bar/pub, jeans and a t-shirt are probably a safe call; if you are doing something active, shorts and a t-shirt are appropriate (ratty old stained and holy shorts or tees are never okay), etc.

If you have specific questions concerning what is appropriate for where and what, please email me directly – [email protected]. If, for some reason, you have not taken the reins and did not plan the date, it is okay to ask for a hint as to where you are going and what you are doing. There is nothing worse than showing up somewhere dressed completely inappropriately. This not only has a bearing on first impressions, but this will also make you feel completely uncomfortable and self-conscious, holding you back from being your true, genuine, wicked cool self.

An additional note – when in doubt, air on the side of conservative; meaning it is better to be a tad more dressed up than to be too casual, and better to be more neutral than too bold.
